I have been\u00a0anxiously anticipating having goats on the homestead for quite some time.\u00a0 And while\u00a0I’ve been preparing myself for goat motherhood, I’ve also\u00a0been on the hunt for ways to save on the initial startup costs of ownership.\u00a0 The kicker?\u00a0 I found the PERFECT DOE (pictured above)\u00a0and was added to the waiting\u00a0list for a baby of hers Spring of 2018!!! Willow Pond Farm Nigerian Dwarf Goats <\/a><\/strong>have the genetics behind them\u00a0that generate\u00a0both ribbons in the show ring and some pretty impressive dairy abilities in the milk pail.<\/p>\n

If that weren’t exciting enough, after responding to an add for a milk stand in my area, I made a new friend located not even two minutes up the road with an INCREDIBLE herd.\u00a0 So, we were added to the list for a doeling from Gillispie’s LaManchas & Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats<\/a> as well!!!<\/p>\n

I may need to add another Paula Deen cook-book to my ever growing collection of favorites\u00a0because soon there will be cheese and butter in everything<\/em> around here!\u00a0 I’ll also need to rendez-vous with Jillian Michaels but that’s for another post…<\/p>\n

It\u00a0needs to be mentioned that\u00a0since we are going with a miniature breed, the tips listed may\u00a0require some modifications\u00a0for full sized goats.\u00a0 From what I’ve read they can and will do everything possible to find the proverbial\u00a0greener grass\u00a0on the other side of the fence.<\/p>\n

Tip number 1:\u00a0 Try to\u00a0think about and get in front of\u00a0future repairs.\u00a0 I’ve always looked for ways to\u00a0 be proactive versus reactive and feel it’s saved me a lot, in both sanity and financial departments.\u00a0 One awesome\u00a0recommendation I’ve\u00a0found is to run the fencing\u00a0along the\u00a0inside of the posts.\u00a0 That way, since the goats\u00a0\u00a0will\u00a0naturally be leaning, rubbing and\u00a0\u00a0standing up pressing out, it won’t pop the fence off the posts or unravel woven wire from the consistent\u00a0pressure.<\/p>\n

Tip number 2:\u00a0 You essentially have\u00a0three options for wire.\u00a0 Welded wire is the least expensive up front.\u00a0\u00a0 4ft tall should be sufficient and if I have any escapees I will run an electric wire along the top of that.\u00a0 Other, more costly, options include woven wire and cattle panels.\u00a0 Because welded wire can have longevity issues, we are opting for woven, no climb, horse fence.\u00a0 This\u00a0ensures\u00a0your squares are small enough that tiny kids can’t squeeze through.\u00a0 I ran price comparisons against Lowes, Tractor Supply Co and Amazon.\u00a0 Tractor Supply\u00a0\u00a0for the win!\u00a0 You can find it here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tip number 3:\u00a0 Posts to hold the fence make up the other half of your largest initial costs.\u00a0 From an aesthetic point of view, you may not like the look of\u00a0metal posts, but they are\u00a0less than\u00a0half the price of lumber.\u00a0\u00a0You’ll still need to purchase a few\u00a0round fence posts\u00a0for corners and to space every 10 feet or so, however\u00a0utilizing both the stability and cost effectiveness of the metal\u00a0posts<\/strong><\/a> makes this the most appealing option for\u00a0a\u00a0budget start up.<\/p>\n

Tip number 4:\u00a0 Make your own fence stretcher.\u00a0 There’s no reason to buy a fancy, and\u00a0steeply priced fence stretcher.\u00a0 Simply notch out a 2×4, slip it into the slots and pull the fence taut.<\/p>\n

Tip number 5:\u00a0 Do it yourself!\u00a0\u00a0You will spend a small fortune in\u00a0labor costs if you don’t.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This will cut costs in half and offer the sense of accomplishment that only comes when you devote your time to a project and get to enjoy the finished product for many years.\u00a0 Your goats and bank account will thank you for it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
